Involuntary Desire

06/27/2024

When first gaze laid upon thine face,

A start, abruptly crowded sight.

Beating pulse transporting space,

Brought a flame to blow alight.

A swift, strained glance towards a hand,

Found a wall of pressured coal.

Upon a gold and silver band,

The words I felt took their toll.

The heart refused to think the end,

The mind perused a path around,

But ultimately no natural bend,

Could fathom I as solid ground.

A curve aligned with fair brown eyes,

Two clear, brown moons shining down,

On cheeks proposed a smile so wry,

It crept and danced from chin to crown.

A lilting laugh broke silent thought,

And glee rushed forth to fill the void,

Words demurely framed and taught,

Burst like birds on breezy boyd.

We sat as though in times long past,

Flirting like two awkward fools.

Trading hearts to burn and last.

Tides of love from blazing pools.

Circumstance surely provides,

A dimly lit and dotted line,

To wax or wane like ocean tides

Or cling to fate like summer vines.

What is not written can’t be known,

Nor spilt before it’s earthly time,

But balk at fate’s resonant tone,

And what could be will never rhyme.

A chance, a chance, shall always live,

Within the dream of that fair meet,

One day perhaps she’ll fortune give,

And he will honor love’s true heat.
